WRITING OPPORTUNITY WITH DR. LARRY CHAPMAN

Dear Writer,

Would you like to be part of an exciting writing venture with Dr. Gary Chapman, best-selling author of The Five Love Languages? Dr. Chapman and I are pulling together a new book and we’d like to invite you to be a part of it.

You may be familiar with me as the editor of the Christian segment of A Cup of Comfort series of inspirational stories published by Adams Media. Or you may connect me with the Life Savors series (Tyndale), or the Guideposts’ Extraordinary Answers to Prayer series of stories. Whether you’re one of the wonderful writers who inspired others through these compilations, or whether you’re new to my projects, I’d like to hear your story.

A number of Dr. Chapman’s books have dealt with the theme of love in relationships – not only how to effectively communicate love but also learning to become a loving person. Previously, we put together a volume of stories entitled Love is a Verb: Stories of What Happens When Love Comes Alive. Now Dr. Chapman would like to give others an opportunity to share how God’s love has transformed their life and the lives of others.

We are compiling a collection of these pieces in a volume entitled, The Love is a Verb Devotional: Stories of God’s Love in Our Lives, which Bethany House will publish in autumn, 2011. It will contain 365 daily one-page stories, each with a title and one Scripture verse and a one-sentence concluding thought. The main body of the story must be between 150 and 175 words. The Scripture verse can be between 10 and 30 words. The title would ideally be four words but may be up to six. The concluding thought would ideally be 10 words but no more than twenty.

The devotionals should demonstrate how God’s love for you, and in you, has empowered you to love authentically and transformed you and your relationships. Those relationships include: spouses, family members, friends, and fellow workers. But they may also relate to a neighbor, acquaintance, or even someone like a homeless person. We will also accept stories that reveal how God’s love brought positive change in you.

We prefer the style of devotional that primarily revolves around one story or illustration; devotionals that are more story-driven than teaching or focusing on scripture in an expository manner. They should focus on illustrations that depict the intriguing work of God’s love. We prefer stories to be in first person, based on your personal experience of growth. But “as-told-to” stories will be considered.

If your piece is selected, you will receive a one-time fee of $10 upon publication per piece, author copies, and author discounts of 50%. We do not accept reprints, but after the book is published, authors may resell their devotions to other markets. You may submit as many devotions as you like.

We would like to receive all submissions by February 1, 2011, but hope most will be submitted by the end of the year. We will announce those selected for the book around April 15, so we ask for your patience through the process. If your story is selected, we will send a permission agreement for you to sign.

Please include all contact information (name, address, e-mail address, phone, brief bio) on your manuscript (not just in the e-mail), and attach your submission as a Word file. Please send all submissions and address all queries to my associate, Jeanette Gardner Littleton, at livseries@earthlink.net.

You may feel free to pass this e-mail along to others. If you have received this e-mail from a friend, we regularly contact authors about manuscript needs. If you’d like to be on our editorial list to receive these calls, let us know.

Thank you so much for considering participating in this exciting follow up to Love is a Verb.

Blessings to you and yours,

James Stuart Bell
Editor with Dr. Gary Chapman

E-BOOK BUYERS BUYING MORE

E-book consumers say they are buying more books overall, but fewer in print, and are decreasing their total dollars spent, according to new research from the Book Industry Study Group (BISG). The sales shift is just one key finding in the first installment of the 2010−2011 cycle of BISG’s Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading survey set. Since November 2009, Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading has been tracking the habits and preferences of print book buyers who say they have acquired an e-book or dedicated e-reading device within the past 18 months.

NEW BOOK FOR FICTION WRITERS

Just wanted to alert you that I have added a new fiction book to my bookstore. It is Plot Versus Character, A Balanced Approach to Writing Great Fiction. The author, Jeff Gerke, is also the author of The Art and Craft of Writing Christian Fiction. This hands-on guide will help the author create a well-rounded novel which embraces both of these crucial story components. Gerke understands fiction as well as anyone--and knows how to teach it in his books in a way that will put your fiction over the top. Besides that, it is fun to read. I encourage every fiction writer and would-be fiction to read both these books before starting your next novel. Plot Versus Character is available in my online bookstore at www.stuartmarket.com (link on home page). I also carry The Art and Craft of Writing Christian Fiction but you won't find it in the bookstore yet (bookstore is currently being updated). However, you can just e-mail me directly to order that one (stuartcwmg@aol.com).

NEW MARKET GUIDE FEATURES

Each year as I prepare a new manuscript for the market guide, I am on a constant lookout for new features that will help make the guide even more useful. This year I was sure that after twenty-five years I had exhausted every possibility for finding something new to add—but I was wrong.
One thing you will find in the book publisher listing is that the royalty and advance information is highlighted to make it easier to spot. Likewise in the periodical listings, you will find the payment information highlighted. In working with the listings, I found such highlighting made it easier to compare listings within a category and pick the most appealing one.
The new feature I’m most excited about has to do with the writer’s guidelines. From personal experience—as well as from complaints I get from writers—I’m well aware that although a good number of publisher have their guidelines available on their Website—they are often hard or impossible to find. Since I typically check every Website for publishers listed in the guide, it occurred to me that once I found them myself, I could share that information with you. For that reason you will find instructions for finding their guidelines in each listing. You won’t find those instruction in every listing—even those that claim they are on the site—because I wasn’t able to find them. I’ll keep looking and let you know if I discover any additional information. My hope is that by having this help you will be more likely to find and study those guidelines before submitting. I can’t stress enough how important that is in selling your work.

BETHANY PRESS CELEBRATE 1/2 MILLION DIGITAL BOOKS

In just 18 months, digital book printing at Bethany Press has already outgrown its initial location. “Our entry into the digital manufacturing realm has been intentionally low-key and low-capital”, said John DePree, President/CEO of Bethany Press. “We needed to cut through all the hype and then assess the equipment, workflow, and software to ensure that the solution we chose would be implemented profitably and reflect the high standards of Bethany Press.”

After digitally printing 600,000 books in the last 18 months, the explosive growth has required the expansion of our digital manufacturing area. Adding 10,000 square feet enables Bethany Press to take the next leaps in technology and capacity, setting the stage for even further growth.

In addition to our solid long-run digital solutions, we have plans in place to push short run technology and capacity to the next level in the coming months.

If you would like to know more about Bethany Press and the breadth of publisher services they offer, please visit their web site (bethanypress.com) or contact John DePree @ 952-914 7417.

NEW WEBSITE UP

I am happy to announce that I finally have my new Website up (still www.stuartmarket.com). It needs additional work and tweeking, but wanted to at least get it started. Will be continuing to work on it in the weeks ahead.

The important thing is that you can now order the 2011 Christian Writers Market Guide which should be out by the first of January (waiting for a delivery date). If you order early you will be among the first to get your copy. You can also sign up there to get the guide automatically every year and freeze the price at the current level for all future editions. That form was not working properly on the old Website, so if you tried unsuccessfully to sign up for that, go back and do it again. If you have been getting it automatically every year, there is no need to sign up again.

All the writing resources are not listed in the bookstore as yet (waiting for my Webmaster to prepare the rest of them), but if there is a book you need that you know I carry, just e-mail me directly with your order (stuartcwmg@aol.com). I'm always open to suggestions for improvements.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT CASE RESOLVED

ECPA Resolves Copyright Infringement Case: Publisher coalition announces victory in seven year legal battle

Last week, the High Court of Justice in London issued a Consent Order under which Andrew (Amue) Ansell admitted to infringing a large quantity of Christian theological works by displaying them on his websites, including biblecentre.net , and agreed not to post any copyrighted material in the future. This resolves a nearly seven-year legal battle that ECPA and its publisher coalition, represented by US attorney Brian Flagler and UK attorney Martyn Bailey, have fought in the UK judicial system. In addition, Amue/Ansell submitted a written apology for his actions, acknowledging that he was in violation of the law and Christian principles. Copyrighted works have been deleted from his servers and ECPA has submitted to him a letter informing him of future steps that would be taken should he infringe other materials published by any ECPA member.
