CHANGES AT EVANGELICALNEWS.ORG

Christian Newswire/ -- Evangelical News, "The Place Where Ministries Meet," announces the official unveiling of the web site's new look.
The updated design of Evangelical News features a lighter, brighter look that is easier to read and use.

While the mainstream media routinely ignore ministry news, Evangelical News, as the name suggests, specifically includes ministry stories. Evangelical News targets primarily ministry leaders; its purpose is to keep those busy leaders abreast of pertinent national, international, and ministry news.

E. Stewart Black, Director of Technologies for Evangelical News, says, "We hope that this new look enhances users' enjoyment of our web site. Our intention was to make the look-and-feel a bit more contemporary." A current subscriber finds the new and improved web site "very eye appealing."

Evangelical News offers, at no charge, a headline subscription service that is a digest of the day's news. The headlines, with a link to each article listed, are sent every weekday to the subscribers' email inbox. Each piece is personally selected by the Editor for interest, timeliness and importance to the evangelical community.
Headquartered in Southern California, Evangelical News has served the greater evangelical community for eight years and is operated as a free, not-for-profit, personal ministry of its Editor and staff.

2009 CHRISTIAN BOOK OF THE YEAR

Thursday, March 19, Dallas, TX – The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) announced tonight the winners of the 2009 Christian Book Awards during the 2009 Christian Book Expo (CBE) in Dallas. For the first time in the award's 30-year history, a study Bible was named Christian Book of the Year: the ESV Study Bible (Crossway).

The ESV Study Bible, which sold more than 180,000 units within five months of release, also won its category for best Bible, the first time a Bible has won both its category and the overall Christian Book of the Year award. The ESV Study Bible released to strong demand in October 2008, selling out of its 100,000-copy first printing as quickly as it reached bookstores shelves.

According to the publisher, the ESV Study Bible is also one of the first Bibles to have an online component: every hardcover purchaser can access the entire study Bible online for free. The ESV Online Bible provides additional unique features, including the ability to create personal online notes; to search and follow interactive links between notes, maps, articles, charts, timelines, illustrations, and cross-references; to listen to audio recordings of the ESV; and to access additional resources not available in the print edition.

Presented annually to the finest in Christian publishing since 1978, the Christian Book Awards honors titles in six categories – Bibles, Bible Reference & Study, Christian Life, Fiction, Children & Youth, and Inspiration & Gift. The six category winners for 2009 are:

“This was a memorable evening in many respects,” says Mark Kuyper, president, ECPA. “It was the first time a study Bible earned top honors and the first time we've opened the awards presentation to the public—a perfect launch into the inaugural Christian Book Expo.”

The 2009 Christian Book Awards were presented during a multi-media event featuring numerous authors, and the event was open to the public for the first time in its history. The event, produced by international events management company One Smooth Stone, featured drama vignettes, readings and personal testimonies—all based on the impact of Christian books. Worship Leader and Dove Award™ nominee Travis Cottrell also performed at the event. The Christian Book of the Year award was announced alongside other Christian Book Award winners in six categories. During the awards dinner, donations were accepted in support of the Global Publishers Alliance (GPA). GPA was established in 1993 to equip Christian leaders in developing countries with training and resources so they can publish Christian books for their own people.

ECPA has a broad marketing strategy in place for the promotion of the 2009 Christian Book Awards. ECPA has partnered with Christianity Today Inc. (CTi) to promote the winning titles to its consumer base via its numerous print publications and popular websites. National retail outlets have designed in-store and consumer promotions to increase awareness of the Christian Book Award winners. The retail participants include: Berean Christian Stores, Family Christian Stores, LifeWay Christian Stores, Munce Group, Parable, CBD/ChristianBooks.com, Amazon.com, Borders and Crossings Book Club. YOUNG ADULT FICTION AWARD

Christian Newswire/ -- Each year, hundreds of booksellers across the South vote on their favorite hand-sell books of the year. These are the Southern books they have most enjoyed selling to customers; the ones that they couldn't stop talking about; the ones most often pushed into a customer's hands with the words "You have got to read this!" The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Book Award (SIBA) was created to recognize great books of Southern origin.

For a book to be eligible, it must be set in the South, and it must have been originally published within the 2008 calendar year. Only SIBA-member booksellers can submit nominations and vote on the selection of finalists. Winners will be chosen from the list of finalists by a jury of SIBA booksellers.

Vonda Skelton, author of Bitsy and the Mystery at Hilton Head Island, has been nominated for the young adult fiction SIBA book Award. Skelton says, "What an honor to be considered for the SIBA Book Awards, especially since Bitsy is a southern girl through-and- through. All her adventures take place in southern settings, too, including Hilton Head Island, SC, Amelia Island, FL, and Tybee Island, GA. As a matter of fact, the hardest part about writing Bitsy's stories is trying to figure out plausible ways to get a poor 12-year-old kid to all these cool southern islands!

"I love writing kids' stories that include mystery, adventure, and humor, while reinforcing positive life lessons. The characters make bad choices, fight with siblings, and struggle with right and wrong. But I work hard to creatively include the natural consequences of poor choices -- something that's often missing in much of today's preteen fiction. We don't have to drag kids into the gutter in order to encourage them to read. We just need to offer them heart-throbbing adventure, realistic conflict, and emotion. It's a real plus when they can learn truth about life at the same time."

About the Author:
Vonda Skelton is an entertaining speaker and author with a heart for women and their families. Skelton worked as an RN for many years and as freelance writer and speaker is a frequent instructor at writer's conferences and enjoys mentoring and encouraging new writers.

"Mission Possible" is a very personal story written directly for the Christian whose spouse may not share the same passion for God. The Kindle from Amazon is a new e-book reader which has rapidly gained popularity in the past year with an estimated 500,000 units sold to-date. This popularity was spurred on by Oprah Winfrey highlighting it on her show in October, 2008 and declaring, "it is absolutely my new favorite thing in the world!"

"Mission Possible" was first released in December, 2007 as a paperback. Through this partnership between Signalman and Alabaster Box, "Mission Possible" is now available to Kindle readers in the Amazon Kindle store.

NEW GUIDEPOST'S SERIES ON PRAYER

Dear Writer,

I’d like to invite you to be part of an exciting new series that Guideposts is sponsoring: The Incredible Power of Prayer.

You may have contributed to one or more of my story volumes in A Cup of Comfort, Life Savors, or Love is a Verb. Great! I’d love to hear from you whether you’re a previous associate or have not yet submitted anything to my projects.

Prayer is the heartbeat of the Christian life and is an amazing gift from God to us. A prayer in faith can spur God’s heart to “move mountains” on our behalf. The incredible power of prayer can accomplish miracles that go far beyond anything we humans can accomplish on our own.

Guideposts reaches millions of Americans with their upbeat message of God empowering us. And now, Guideposts is launching a series of 12 books on various aspects of prayer and how people from every walk of life have been transformed through God’s responses. These books will be mailed monthly as part of a book club promotion, and will be exclusive to this readership.

I am now collecting submissions for the first three books in the series and would welcome as many stories as you wish to submit. The first volume is Praying from the Heart and covers God answering our deeply felt prayers of great passion, sincerity, and trust. These prayers may be repentant, express deep gratitude, or describe desperate cries that lay bare a person’s deepest needs.

The second volume, The Healing Touch, deals with stories about prayers that lead to physical, spiritual, relational, or emotional healing. They may involve relationships that don’t resolve perfectly, but bring a closer relationship with God and a new sense of purpose and greater ability.

The third volume, Expecting Miracles, includes personal experience stories about audacious prayers with powerful answers. This is where the need is great and God responds extraordinarily. The answers don’t need to be purely supernatural; God can work in mysterious ways using all kinds of means.

Submissions can be up to 2000 words. Each story should have a creative title, an attention-grabbing lead, main body explaining a conflict or challenge, and a resolution. These need to be descriptive and compelling personal experience stories—not simply testimonies. We prefer original stories but you may also submit previously published stories. The payment is $25 for stories under 1000 words, and $50 for longer stories. You may retain the rights to publish the stories in magazines and books with smaller distribution sources.

We are accepting manuscripts from now until at least June 15 for the first three volumes. We’ll announce the finalists for the first volume around October 15.
Please include on each manuscript—not in headers or simply in the e-mail—your name, contact information (address, phone, e-mail, rights offered) and a bio of up to 30 words. Please attach to the e-mail rather than pasting text in the body.

Please direct all inquiries and manuscript submissions to my colleague, Jeanette Littleton at IncrediblePrayers@earthlink.net. And please feel free to let others know about this project. If this e-mail has been forwarded to you, and you can’t submit to this call, but would like to be notified about other editorial needs as they arise, please send us your e-mail address and we’ll add you to our notification list (we do not sell or distribute these e-mail addresses).

Blessings to you and yours,

James Stuart Bell

FILMMAKING COMPETITION

Redemptive filmmaking is growing in popularity and this provides an opportunity for good redemptive filmmakers. Regent University's award-winning film school is filling the gap by offering a full tuition scholarship to the winner of its ReelDreams Film Competition.

Redemptive Filmmakers across the US are submitting their 3-5 minute original films at www.reeldreamsfilmfest.com. The submission period began on January 16 and runs until April 3, 2009. The competition process invites audience participation. During the first round of judging, one of the 25 semifinalists will be selected by votes from an online audience. The other 24 will be chosen by Regent's award winning cinema-television faculty. The 25 semifinalists will then be narrowed down to the top five, who will then be invited to the final event on May 16, 2009. The top five will participate in workshops with the judges followed by the final event.

Regent University's ReelDreams Film Competition is designed to empower aspiring film artists to use their talents and abilities to bring creative films to the entertainment industry. It aims to reveal and focus attention on works of quality from independent filmmakers to contribute to the growth and recognition of young artists and to feature positive messages that transform the minds of audiences worldwide.

Film industry professionals will serve as judges at the ReelDreams final event on May 16. The grand-prize winner will be announced at Regent University's Performing Arts Center in Virginia Beach, VA. Additionally, an "audience favorite winner" will be selected by the live audience and by an online-voting audience via live webcast of the final event on www.reelgood.tv.

The grand-prize winner will receive a full tuition scholarship to Regent University's School of Communication & the Arts. Last year's contest winner, Timothy Kay of Cleveland, Ohio, is now an undergraduate cinema-television major at Regent. Regent students receive hands-on opportunities to learn their craft. As a freshman Kay has already been involved in six to seven student films.

Through this film competition, Regent University's School of Communication & the Arts looks for original work that portrays a carefully crafted protagonist facing a moral dilemma that leads to good or bad consequences. The protagonist could make a decision that is ultimately a good choice, or the story may be a cautionary tale.

The School of Communication and the Arts offers bachelor, master's and doctoral degrees in animation, cinema-television, communication studies, digital media, journalism, script and screenwriting, and theatre. Its student films have won over 205 awards. The School is housed in one of the finest production facilities in the Eastern United States. www.regent.edu/communication

THOMAS NELSON UNVEILS NELSONFREE

Thomas Nelson, Inc., announced today that it launched a dynamic new program, NelsonFree, that allows readers to experience their content in multiple formats -- the physical book, the audio book, and the e-book -- without making multiple purchases. Traditionally, customers who want to experience more than the physical printed word have to make additional investments in the audio and e-book formats. Not anymore. With NelsonFree, the everyday price of the hardcover book includes both the audio and the e-book.

And accessing the content is easy. After readers purchase a book with the NelsonFree logo, they will be directed to a website where they must register and answer a simple security question. Once complete, they will be able to download an audio MP3 file and several types of e-book files, including EPub, MobiPocket, and PDF.

The first two NelsonFree titles will reach stores in late March, Scott McKain's Collapse of Distinction and Michael Franzese's I'll Make You An Offer You Can't Refuse. Another ten Thomas Nelson titles will be available in this unique format before the end of the year.

"The book is, in a sense, trapped by its format," said Joel Miller, publisher of Nelson's Business and Culture division, "and so is the consumer -- locked into choosing one format over another or shelling out scarce funds for the same book in different wrappers. By freeing the book we free the reader to get greater use and enjoyment of our titles."

"I believe that the industry is shifting and we, as publishers, need to explore new methods of getting our content into the hands of customers," said Michael S. Hyatt, president and CEO of Thomas Nelson. "NelsonFree will give readers a new level of value and flexibility. It will enhance their literary experience and allow greater employment of the content without breaking the bank."

(From Sally: My understanding is that the author has the option of whether or not their book will be included in this program.)

JUST A REMINDER

Just want to remind any of you who have recieved a questionnaire from me for the next Christian Writers' Market Guide that it's time to get those in. Although the deadline was earlier this week, there is still time to get them in. If you don't respond I'll have to e-mail or call you and that takes so much time. I really will appreciate you saving me all that trouble. Thanks a bunch!

Churchmouse Publications, LLC has issued its first round of acceptance letters and syndicate-producer agreements to its initial group of producers. The features of this select PRE-LAUNCH group of producers will be available for syndicated publication and purchase on OPENING DAY of www.churchmousepublications.com.

The editors at Churchmouse Producers request that all current and potential producers hold all further submissions until AFTER THE LAUNCH of the website.

“Clearly,” says Churchmouse steward Clarice James, “we will always welcome qualified producers and excellent features, but the submission and review process will change POST-LAUNCH. At that time, potential producers will be able to create their own account on the website and upload their features for review by our Editorial Advisor Board. The process will be streamline and more efficient.”

Churchmouse steward Susan Loud added, “Everyone has been working hard—our producers, our Editorial Advisory Board, and our staff. The website designers and programmers are doing a great job incorporating our ideas and requirements into a system more complex than we first envisioned.

“We know you all want to know the EXACT DATE of the launch—and so do we! What we can tell you is that our whole team is moving forward to that end. As soon as we are satisfied that the website is functioning as designed and that all the features have been uploaded and ready to go, we promise to let you know. We wouldn’t consider celebrating without you!”

You may request the Churchmouse Publications Submissions Guidelines by emailing submissions@churchmousepublications.com. Thank you!
